Make Today a Day of Trust

Make Today a Day of Trust

The great missionary, Hudson Taylor said, “When I cannot read, when I cannot think, when I cannot even pray, I can trust!”

The great missionary, Hudson Taylor said, "When I cannot read, when I cannot think, when I cannot even pray, I can trust!"At the age of 19, Hudson Taylor left his home in England to serve as a medical missionary to China. The year was 1853. Four years later, in 1857, the missionary society which had sponsored Taylor could no longer financially support its missionaries. So Taylor stayed on as an independent missionary, trusting God to meet his needs.

In 1861, Taylor became seriously ill and had to return to England to recover. Hudson was particularly burdened for the unreached people of China’s vast interior. So he used his time of recuperation in England to sound the call and recruit others. Returning to China with more missionaries, he established the China Inland Mission (CIM). Its missionaries would have no salaries and were not allowed to appeal for funds. The plan was this: Trust God to meet our needs!

In spite of Hudson Taylor’s dedication to God and the mission, his life was plagued by illness and bouts of depression. His first wife died at the age of 33, and four of their eight children died before age 10. Through it all, Hudson Taylor continued to serve and to trust God. The mission he established now goes by the name of Overseas Missionary Fellowship and is still reaching people for Christ in China today.

I am encouraged and emboldened by this word TRUST.

Hudson Taylor’s life and words inspire me to let go of worry, fear, and doubt and simply TRUST God, the Blessed Controller of All Things. He is faithful, gracious, merciful, victorious, and trustworthy. Today, I especially need that “trustworthy part.” This is my new daily watchword: Make Today a Day of Trust.
