A-Z List of The Attributes of God

A-Z List of The Attributes of God

Years ago, I began to study the names and attributes of God in preparation for making banners for worship services at my church. That personal study was one of the most memorable and life-changing studies of my life. It accelerated my Christian growth and drew me closer to God. To this day, it enhances “my personal story.” This is what I want for the readers of this blog, and that is why I’m providing this list.

This is a list that can never be finished; I will add to it from time to time.

A Word of Clarification and Caution: I am concerned about those who promote the attributes of God without actually having God, without knowing Him personally through His Son, Jesus Christ. Please don’t confuse “a false worship of attributes” with the true worship found in genuine relationship with the whole person of Jesus Christ.

Most entries here are explained by a Bible verse only. I have briefly commented on others. There is much more that could be said about each attribute, but this list is meant as a quick reference just to get you started. And I’ll tell you what, friends, if you’re feeling down, just read through these short reminders of who our God is, and you’ll get cheered up!

A-Z List of The Attributes of God

Alpha and Omega — “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” – Revelation 22:13

Ancient of Days — “As I looked, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze.” – Daniel 7:9

Comforter — The Holy Spirit is our Comforter. Jesus said, “And I will pray to the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.” – John 14:16

Charles H. Spurgeon said that the study of the attributes of God expands the mind and enlarges the intellect. It certainly draws the Christian closer to God. Here is an A-Z List of The Attributes of God.Creator — “Hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary?” – Isaiah 40:28

Spurgeon said that the study of the attributes of God expands the mind and enlarges the intellect. It certainly draws the Christian closer to God. Here is an A-Z List of The Attributes of God.

Omniscient — God is all-knowing. “Who can fathom the Spirit of the LORD, or instruct the LORD as his counselor? Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge, or showed him the path of understanding?” — Isaiah 40:13-14

END NOTE: As an English teacher, I have to say that it’s difficult to make a list that is grammatically parallel, as lists are supposed to be. That means that some of the entries are nouns and some are adjectives, and it can’t be helped. Since I have teacher friends who read my blog, I want you to know that I tried for parallelism but decided that I had to get over that idea.

Thank you for taking the time to compose this list. I’ve wanted to do this for some time but was always “too busy” I think I’ll borrow yours to finally start one myself. Thank you again.

  4. Thank you for compiling this valuable list of God’s attributes. God has used it this morning to help me look up at Him and Who He is instead of my difficult “Jericho”.

    • “God has used it this morning to help me look up at Him and Who He is.” That’s exactly what I was hoping for when I compiled it, Cathy. Thank you very much for taking the time to share this!

  6. Thank you for compiling this list so thoughtfully. As a former teacher, I appreciate your note about nouns and adjectives. My friend and I are looking for a way to make a flip book of God’s attributes to use with our children on busy mornings. Your work will make our task easier!

    • A flip book of God’s attributes to use with children, what a great idea! If I’ve helped in even the smallest way to make that happen, I couldn’t be more thrilled! Thank you for taking time to share this.
